Discuss distinct considerations linked with the psychiatric interview and assessment of children.

A comprehensive assessment of a child and family history is important to better
understand the early stages of the life of a child. A clinical interview with the parents
should serve as the primary basis for a clinical assessment of children and should
include an extensive developmental history of the child, information on any medical or

psychiatric antecedents, information on family functioning, peer relationships, and
school history (Drechsler et al., 2020). Children often do not express themselves
verbally instead through actions like acting out behaviors, being inattentive when
completing tasks, or uncooperative behaviors, impulsive behaviors, and poor social and
academic behaviors, these early signs are key indicators that can be linked to
psychiatric disorders. Culture has an impact on the signs and symptoms of disorders,
the degree of behavioral response to illness, the frequency of illness, the perception of
illness, and the willingness to seek treatment (Koc & Kafa, 2019). Children are expected
to achieve certain milestones such as walking, talking, and being potty trained by a
certain age and delays can alert parents or caregivers that a child may need further
evaluation. Emotional dysregulation affects and impacts a child's mental and well-being
health. When warning signs are present and left, untreated children can continue to
exhibit more maladaptive behaviors that can impact their growth and development and
affect academic and social behavior patterns. Identifying symptoms of childhood trauma
is important as the environment the child lives in an impact the developmental stages.
Deficits in emotion regulation and social problem-solving skills in children can lead to
mental illnesses if left untreated. Children with ADHD symptoms are more prone to
develop an internalizing disorder like depression or anxiety than children without
symptoms (Nigg et al., 2020). Childhood symptoms of ADHD are associated with
emotional dysregulation and irritability (Bryant et al., 2022)
