The nursing profession within healthcare focuses on the care and treatment of patients, families, and the community, hence crucial for life quality, continuation, and optimum health. Nurses vary from their education levels, the scope of practice, approaches to patients and job roles. Nursing education has greatly advanced throughout the years, and the roles of nursing have widely expanded.This paper highlights the Doctorate Nursing Practitioner role as it relates to nursing informatics. Nursing informatics is a relatively new and emerging role in nursing. Nursing informatics plays a significant role not onlyinnursing but in any healthcare environment. The importance of nursing informatics cannot be overlooked nor can the need for doctoral-level nursing leaders within this field. What is nursing informatics? The American Nurses Association (ANA) definesNursing informaticsas"the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice"(HIMSS, 2019, para. 3).This integration collates and analyzes data allowing the field of nursing to draw meaningful insights into patient care; thereby improving patient care and enhancing clinical workflows for the healthcare team (DNP, 2020). The growth ofnursing informatics has been greatly influenced by “interest in the development of minimum data sets, nursing classification systems, adoption of electronic systems and the collection of workload data” (Carrière, 2016).
