Foundations of Group Work and Types of Therapy

 Group psychotherapy or therapy is a form of psychotherapy where one or more therapists simultaneously treat a group of clients with the same problems. Group therapy is widely available in various locations, including hospitals, private therapeutic practices, community centers, and mental health clinics. It usually aims at helping individuals develop socialization and communication skills and allow them to learn how to express their issues with group members while accepting criticism from them. Additionally, it allows the group members to develop self-awareness by listening to the people within the group that has faced and overcome similar situations. The selected group psychotherapy video for this assignment is Dr. Irvin Yalom. This assignment will review the selected video and assess the group therapy techniques demonstrated in the video and how I believe the techniques were demonstrated, the evidence from the literature that supports techniques, the things the therapist did well, and things I would do differently.
Group Therapy Techniques Demonstrated in the VideoThe group members and the therapist demonstrate the use of therapeutic factors to improve the members’ conditions. The therapeutic factors I could identify in the therapy session include self-disclosure, interaction, imparting information, cohesion and acceptance, altruism, and instillationof hope. The therapist allows the group members to interact freely and exchange ideas on the floor, including comments and questions without interference. Free interaction allows members to develop socialization skills (Schwartze et al., 2019). Therefore, the group members learn to listen to each other and respond constructively while taking positive and negative criticism. For instance, during the therapy session, one of the group members raises a concern about Alice’s silence since the beginning of the group. She explains that she has a problem adjusting and
