Outpatient Group Psychotherapy Group therapy is a form of therapy where one or more therapists work with several clients with similar psychological challenges at the same time. The selected video for this therapy is the outpatient group psychotherapy video by Dr. Irvin Yalom. According to Dr. Irvin, the use of group therapy is increasing in many client settings, including inpatient and outpatient, to treat several mental health illnesses. While reviewing the selected video for this assignment, this paper assesses the group psychotherapy techniques demonstrated in the session and how well these techniques were demonstrated. Using evidence from scholarly articles, this paper also analyzes what the therapist did well and the insights gained from watching the therapist handle the group therapy. After establishing things that would have been done differently, I would demonstrate how to lead a group session and handle a different situation with a disruptive group member. Group therapy Techniques Demonstrated The first technique demonstrated in this group session is therapeutic factors. Therapeutic factors are the processes within the group and during the sessions that improve the clients’ conditions. The therapeutic factors demonstrated in this session include interaction, self-disclosure, cohesiveness and acceptance, imparting of information, instillation of hope, and altruism. Interaction is demonstrated when the group members talk to each other without having to go through the therapist. The goal of group therapy should be to allow each group member an opportunity to develop basic social skills that may not be inborn in them (Schroeder et al., 2018).Through this technique, clients learn to listen to others and develop new behaviors by learning from other people’s impressions.
