KMM1 Task 3 Trends Along with technology, the medical industry continues to change at an ever-increasing pace. Technological advancements allow the medical industry to continue to offer improved products and services to better patient’s lives around the world. Along with these advancements, there are two healthcare trends/policies that need to be monitored closely. I. Government payers like Medicaid and Medicare continue to reduce reimbursement amounts for healthcare provider services. While policymaker's motives might be pure trying to help as many people as possible access quality healthcare, in the end, this could end up hurting more people than it helps. This is a frightening trend because if providers cannot cover their costs and make a comfortable living accepting Medicaid and Medicare patients, they will stop accepting these payors altogether. If this happens, 33.3% of all insured patients in the United States will not have access to quality healthcare as 17.9%, and 15.4% of the country have Medicaid or Medicare (Bureau, 2019). II. These same government payors are not only reducing their reimbursement amounts for health care providers; they are also reducing reimbursement to hospitals. If such policies/legislation continues, our hospitals will not make enough profit to stay solvent. Many massive hospital systems are purchasing smaller/midsized hospitals as the smaller hospitals like Trinity Medical Center (TMC) cannot make a profit with decreasing reimbursement rates (The great, 2014)
