Drugs and substance abuse has mainly been associated with adolescents and younger populations with very few studies focusing on the elderly population. However, recent studies have identified the elderly as having significant drugs and substance abuse issues with some cases leading to hospitalizations and emergency care (Chhatre, Cook, Mallik, & Jayadevappa, 2017; Cho, Bhimani, Patel, & Thomas, 2018).
