Clinical Question
For our group and individual RUA project, we are asked to focus on searching about
nursing burnout during pandemic. Prior to the pandemic nursing burnouts was already an issue in
healthcare settings. Shortage of nurses is one of the leading causes of nursing burnouts. As the
COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world, numbers of nursing burnouts are even more
increased. According to study “Their advisory highlighted that an increase of 15.6% of nurse
burnout during COVID-19 pandemic and that emergency room nurses were at higher risk”
(Chaudoin 2020). Nursing burnout can cause stress, mental health problems, nurse suicidal, and
unable a nurse to deliver high quality care to patient. Since the pandemic nurses work longer
hours and as a result of over working, nurses experience high level of stress and anxiety. The
stress of exposure to COVID-19 because they are risking their own health and their family’s
health. According to study constant stress can also negatively affect nurse’s ability to perform
better. For example, stress can lead to inability to focus, to critical think, failure to communicate,
making charting errors, and make medication errors. Excessive workloads are also a threat to the
mental health of nurses, which can lead to nurse suicidal. “A recent report into suicide by female
nurses showed the suicide rate was 23% higher amongst nurses than the UK national average
(Health Europa 2020). Seems like nurse burnouts is a serious matter and it needs to be taken care
of.
In order to conduct researched for this issue, using PICOT method can help us organize
and concise research question. My PICOT question is as follows:
P: Excessive workload on nurses, due to pandemic and its negative affect on nurses.
