 Throughout history healthcare providers have always been advocates for providing communities with education and health screenings to promote healthier populations, even amongst diverse minority groups. With the diversity in populations especially among minority groups, health promotion has never been more important than it is now. Nevertheless, it is essential that healthcare providers become more aware and considerate of cultural, socioeconomic, and sociopolitical barriers to health in order to provide the best care possible to their patients. This paper will address the current health status of the African American minority group along with health promotion for this group, and current health disparities that exist. Current Health Status of the African American Minority Group “In July 2012, 43.1 million people in the United States were Black; alone or in combination. African Americans are the second largest minority population, following the Hispanic/Latino population” (OMH, 2013). The current health status of African Americans detects a greater occurrence of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STI’s), when compared with the caucasian majority group. “In 2010, the death rate for blacks was higher (25.0 per 100,000) compared with any other racial ethnicity group (3.0 whites).
