Concept analyses are used in nursing to explain phenomena further. The phenomenon of
medication errors among nurses in the acute care setting is a dilemma affecting the healthcare
system today. Patients in the acute care setting can be critically ill, and medication errors can
severely impact his/her care. Medication errors kill between 7000 to 9000 people and cost 40
billion dollars annually (Tariq, 2021). There have been many investigations into the causes of
medication errors. The focus of most of these investigations has been the nurses administering
the medications. The concept analysis looks further into explaining why nurses are making
medication errors. This paper aims to use the concept analysis of medication errors to examine
the phenomena of interest, medication errors among nurses in the acute care setting.
Concept Analysis Description
Numerous studies have documented the number of medication errors in healthcare and
how it directly impacts patients. The author of the concept analysis purpose was to find out the
contributing factors impacting medication errors during administration so that there are
appropriate interventions. This concept analysis could benefit the phenomena of nurses making
medication errors in the acute care setting. The concept analysis separated medication error
factors by the organizational factors and nurse factors. Organizational factors were factors that
occurred prior to reaching the patient. These factors include equipment malfunctioning,
technology difficulties, and poor staffing. The Nurse factors were factors that the individual
nurse did that contributed to the medication error (Ledlow et al., 2021). These factors included
inattention, fatigue, and being unfamiliar with the medication administered. The factors listed by
the author show how relevant the concept analysis is to the phenomena. The reasons that nurses
make medication errors in the acute care setting mirror the factors provided by the author
