What feelings, prejudices, and biases did you experience during your clinical experience and how did you manage them? I had many feelings of prejudices in the individual who have mental illness with a substance abuse problem. That comes from a place of childhood trauma, being raised by mentally ill substance abusing parents. My ability to manage my feelings was not an easy task, but rather an ongoing battle. How did you manage your anxiety, self-doubt, and/or uncertainty? I have intense anxiety when trying to determine the correct diagnosis and treatment plan for patients. It is easy to complete these plan s on paperwork and turn into the instructor, but the fear of doing on the live person can be intimidating to say the least. I have my preceptor and colleagues to help confirm my ability and validate my decisions to be adequate. This is a learning process, and I am thankful for the constructive criticism I receive. What understanding or insights did you develop during your clinical experience? I was able to develop some insight on determining the most appropriate drug treatment for individuals. The need to look at the person’s whole body instead of just the mental part. Has reflective practice impacted you as a person, student, and/or provider? If so, how? Yes, reflective practice has influenced me as person, student, and provider. I have gained insight on how to reflect on my own personal beliefs and thoughts, and to never disregard another individual’s personal thoughts and beliefs. Will you continue to use reflection in your future practice? If so why and how?
