Theory of Diversity and Universality is my choice for a nursing theory that will best guide my practice during psychotherapy treatment. Leininger’s nursing theory aims at providing culture sensitive care to all patient population. It supports care measures which incorporate individuals’ or groups’ background; cultural beliefs, practices, and values. To provide the best care possible while remaining nonjudgmental, Leininger thought nurses need to make the use of specific values and practices of care, by identifying and considering the patients’ beliefs (Broch, Oliveira Crossetti, da, & Lisboa Riquinho, D2017). I believe that patient should always be the center of my practice; therefore, it is not about what care is delivered to the patient rather how is the care perceived. It is in that sense then, I entrust the Leininger’s nursing theory to guide my practice. It will encourage the practice to search for patient’s cultural beliefs and practices and incorporate them into the therapy plan. The person-centered theory by Carl Rogers to explain the interpersonal relationships. This is my choice of counseling theory to guide my practice. The person-centered approach of motivational interviewing is known to be effective in changing health behaviors that influence the prevention, course, treatment, and outcomes of a broad range of health problems (Miller & Moyers, 2017). The theory facilitates counseling techniques that incorporate the collaboration of person-centered communication process which is designed to help individuals resolve uncertainty and plan for change.
