Self-evaluation of Providing Nursing Care with Nursing Competencies Providing nursing care in accordance with competencies really sets the stage for safe, effective, quality care. There are six core competencies. Informatics has really pushed us in our development of care outside of the normal hospital setting. I have really come to understand the importance of informatics. Informatics is defined as “Using information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making” (Batalden, P. 6, 2020) Understanding and being able to smoothly navigate the EHR is crucial in providing timely care. When I did my first rotation at the hospital, I made it a priority to understand and educate myself on the EHR and computer systems they use. Being competent with computers has been a struggle for me but I have come a long way. Telehealth is another part of informatics that has made huge improvements in nursing. This allows care from a provider without leaving your house. Leadership and development were not one of my strong competencies initially. I have really struggled with leadership and delegation but have made it a priority to improve. Entering a position as an RN you must develop leadership and delegation skills. Delegation is crucial for timely patient care. With delegation and leadership, we must use our five rights of delegation to provide the safest patient care. This allows for us to follow up and ensure the task was completed correctly and safely. We must lead by example and be advocates for our patients. For example, in the case study with Brandon Johnson, we saw incorrect leadership and delegation. Interventions should have been made when unsafe nursing practices were being performed. As leaders, this is our job to provide a safe patient environment. There are many key leadership behaviors we must possess to be a successful leader, establishing trust and cooperation, acknowledging good work or success, showing respect, providing a sense of direction, resolving conflict successfully, fostering cooperation, reinforcing goals, developing staff strength and be
