Select a current health-related case involving research ethics. (If none come to mind, browse the Internet to familiarize yourself with recent cases.) As you review the case that you have selected, reflect on the ethical principles discussed in “What Are the Major Ethical Issues in Conducting Research?” article found in this week’s Learning Resources. Which principles were breached in the case you have identified?

. The case study that I have selected discusses the ramifications involved during a breech in Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance. The article describes a former employee of a surgical center discussing her health information regarding a new diagnosis of lung cancer to her friend who is currently employed at the facility. The ethical issues begin when the friend discusses the information with another co-worker. The co-worker then further breaches compliance by conducting a research with her friend for the patient’s record and involves a physician to discuss the health information further and interpret the scans. The case entails how a friend’s persuasion in the workplace setting can cause a breach in ethics and laws (Holt & Wiles, 2016). The ethical principles that were breached first began with the friend searching for information regarding her friend’s current health condition. This was an ethical breach because, regardless if the former co-worker and friend wanted her information searched and shared, she should not have included the current worker in her information. It became a problem because, the friend should not have been looking up information for anyone if it is not a current patient that she was not administering care or proving help to further assist. Also, it was another breach in patient information when the co-worker not only involved her friend in the search, but also a physician who did not know the circumstances involved with the patient search.Consequently, there may also have been issues, including a monetary fine for the facility involved due to a breach by the employees. All of these were ethical principles that were breached. If the former co-worker wanted her information or had questions, she should have set-up a meeting with medical records to properly retrieve her documents.
