The first reason I chose the PMHNP specialty is that I will be allowed to specialize in one area. I prefer a field that allows me to grow and become an authority in a focused area. PMHNP offers me this advantage, unlike PNP, which will force me to absorb knowledge in different areas. I believe that I will get to be an authority in mental health once I am through with my studies.
The second reason lies in the fact that mental health issues are currently some of the most problematic issues in society. In the U.S. alone, four in ten adults were said to have experienced some form of mental health issue during the COVID-19 pandemic (Panchal et al., 2021). This is an alarming number and one that is likely to get worse in case measures are not adopted to help reduce the impact of mental health issues.
