Running Head: CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN POWER UTILITY FIRMS 1 Change management as a Key Organizational Tool to Gain Competitive Edge in the Global Market Place Name University Instructor Date CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN POWER UTILITY FIRMS 2 Abstract Business environment is constantly changing due to advances in technology, global financial crisis, shifting consumer tastes and preferences among other factors. Similarly there have been drastic changes in the power utility industry due to technology changes that has brought to the fore green energy, obsolete technology, pressure from activists for power utility firms to produce green energy, rising fuel costs, aging workforce, financial crisis and increased demand for energy worldwide to drive economies. Coupling of these factors has made the energy market very competitive, and characterized by thin margins. Consequently, power utility firms are seeking ways of surviving and enhancing their organic growth. One of the ways to do so is by implementing changes in their business process and organization-wide operations. Unfortunately, not all change initiatives yield intended results. Poor change implementation in an organization may yield catastrophic outcomes which may leave an organization worse than its earlier state. It is therefore prudent for an organization to effectively manage change in order to enhance outcomes. This supposition has lead organizations across the world to develop change management frameworks to facilitate their change management plans. This research study will seek to establish whether power utility firms in Canada gain competitive advantage from sound change management frameworks.
